Google executive hints at Android 8.0 codename, but we’re probably getting trolled

Android 8.0 may be a ways away, but it’s never too early for leaks apparently! Google’s senior vice president of Android, Hiroshi Lockheimer has tweeted a GIF of what looks to be ice cream with Oreo surrounding it.

Naturally, many are speculating that Oreo is bound to be the Android 8.0 dessert name, and it certainly makes sense based on the companies past history of naming new Android versions. Even though Oreo seems like the best bet for a name, I wouldn’t be surprised if we were getting trolled again this year. Last year Lockheimer appeared to be hinting that Android N would be Android Nutella, but the whole Android fan base was proven wrong when the Nougat statue was unveiled just a few weeks later.

Regardless, we’ve still got a long ways to go before anything official is released. I suspect it’ll be June of this year at the earliest. Do you think the next Android version will be Oreo? If history has taught us anything, then it probably won’t be. What do you want the next Android version to be called?
